Overview of Industrial-Grade Carton Sealing Tapes
Carton sealing tapes are a critical component in packaging and shipping goods safely. The tape creates a strong bond that keeps cartons closed during transport and storage. Tape must withstand heavy weights, impacts, vibration, moisture, and other environmental factors for industrial applications. Industrial carton sealing tapes use three main adhesive types: hot melt, acrylic, and natural rubber.
Hot Melt Adhesive Tapes
Hot melt adhesive tapes are the most popular choice for heavy-duty box sealing. The adhesive is heated to apply a thick, strong glue layer that secures instantly on contact. Polypropylene film is usually paired with hot melt adhesive to create a durable, moisture-resistant tape. Key benefits of hot melt tapes include high immediate bond strength, the ability to seal cartons with dusty or damp surfaces, and resistance to temperature extremes. Hot melt also produces a permanent bond and can’t be repositioned. Common uses are sealing corrugated boxes, taping plastic bags, and pallet unitizing.
Acrylic Adhesive Tapes
Acrylic adhesive offers an excellent balance of strength and flexibility for industrial uses. The adhesive is based on an acrylic polymer mixed with a tackifying resin and stabilizers. It bonds well, even on complex surfaces like coated cartons or polyethylene. Unlike more rigid hot melt seals, acrylic tape can stretch with expanding and contracting boxes. The adhesive strength builds slowly over time to create a long-lasting bond. Acrylic is also more resistant to UV light and oxidation than other adhesives. It’s available in various backing materials like paper, plastic films, and cloth.
Natural Rubber Adhesive Tapes
Natural rubber adhesive provides a reliable seal with good aging properties. The adhesive comprises natural or synthetic rubber combined with resins and oils. Rubber-based tapes adhere well to corrugated cardboard and offer high shear strength to resist box compression forces. The flexible backing and stretchy adhesive conform well over uneven carton seams and edges. Natural rubber also performs better than synthetic acrylics at extremely low temperatures. On the downside, natural rubber adhesives can have lower tack and weaker initial bonds versus other adhesives. Overall, rubber carton sealing tapes offer an economical option.
